Christmas Gifts for Hackers in Europe: Arrive in Time
Christmas gifts for hackers in Europe that arrive in time: when to order, why to skip AliExpress, customs, holiday returns and last-minute online plan Bs.
To get a hacker's gift delivered before Christmas in Europe, order from a shop that ships from inside the EU, allow at least one to two weeks of margin on the advertised delivery times, and keep a digital plan B for delays. Parcels from outside the EU add customs and unpredictable delays, which is the main reason gifts turn up in January. Most Christmas gift guides for hackers are written for the US, with Amazon US links and dollar prices; this one is about getting the parcel to a European door.

When to order: planning around cut-off dates
Cut-off dates change every year and depend on the carrier. National postal services, DHL, UPS and others usually publish recommended last posting dates as the holidays approach; check them on their sites. A posting date isn't an order date: add the shop's preparation time.
In December, parcel volumes rise sharply and normal delivery times stretch. Here are our cautious margins, which are not official carrier dates:
| Destination (shipped from France) | When to order, to be safe | Why |
|---|---|---|
| France | Late November, early December at the latest | December volume peak |
| Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and other neighbouring EU countries | Late November | One more carrier in the chain |
| Rest of the EU | Mid to late November | Longer transit to distant countries |
| United Kingdom, Switzerland | Mid-November | Customs clearance (outside the EU) |
| Outside Europe | Early November | Customs and air freight |
For the UK and Switzerland, the parcel leaves the EU: import taxes and clearance fees may be charged to the recipient. Since Brexit, a shipment from France to the UK is an import; depending on the seller, VAT is charged at checkout or collected on delivery with a handling fee. For a gift, that's a bad surprise; check what the shop covers.

Why to avoid AliExpress for a gift (delays, customs, clones)
AliExpress and similar marketplaces sell a lot of cheaper hacking hardware. For personal use with no deadline, that's sometimes reasonable. For a Christmas gift, three reasons for caution:
- Delays. Advertised delivery times are estimates, and shipments from Asia are particularly exposed to December backlogs.
- Customs. Since 1 July 2021, VAT is due on every parcel imported into the EU, even low-value ones. It's sometimes paid at checkout, sometimes collected on delivery with a handling fee. The EU has also moved to end the customs duty exemption for small parcels; check the current rule with your national customs authority.
- Clones. Popular tools are often copied. RTL-SDR sticks of very variable quality and counterfeits of well-known devices circulate, with no documentation and sometimes different components. A clone that doesn't work on 25 December is a failed gift and a hard return.
Buying from a shop established in the EU solves all three: no customs, predictable delivery, and someone to talk to for after-sales support.
8 gifts that arrive in time (or don't need to arrive)
Rather than a list of products "in stock", here are eight gifts sorted by delivery risk.
Hardware, order early:
- An RTL-SDR receiver: a USB stick that turns a computer into a radio receiver, to watch aircraft or receive satellites. €60 from us.
- The Hacker Starter Gift Set: an RTL-SDR, an Evil Crow RF v2 board and a getting-started guide, in a gift box. €125.
- A logic analyzer: a USB box that decodes the traffic between chips. €19.90.
- Blank NFC cards: fifteen contactless cards to programme with a phone. €14.90.
These four are being launched at Hacker Toys: sign up to hear when orders open. Our gifts under €100 page has other combinations.
Books, available from your local bookshop:
- The Hardware Hacking Handbook (No Starch Press, 2021) for an experienced enthusiast.
- The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll, a true investigation that reads like a novel.
Digital gifts, no delivery needed:
- A CTF challenge as a gift: pick a challenge on a free platform such as picoCTF or Root-Me, or a pentest lab on CyberCTF, our sister site, and print it on a card.
- A conference ticket: a local BSides, or in France Le Hack, SSTIC, Pass the SALT or BreizhCTF. Check dates and ticket sales on their sites.
Gift wrapping, a personal note, exchanges after Christmas
A few details turn a parcel into a present.
- Wrapping. The Hacker Starter Gift Set is designed as a gift box. For anything else, ask the shop whether it offers wrapping, or plan to do it yourself.
- The note. For a technical gift, a card that says what it does beats any wrapping: "With this, you can see the planes flying over the house."
- Delivery address. If the parcel goes to the recipient, the surprise is gone. Have it delivered to you, or to a pick-up point.
- Exchanges. When you buy online from a business in the EU or the UK, the cancellation period is generally 14 days from delivery. For a gift opened on 25 December but delivered in late November, that window may have closed: check whether the shop offers an extended holiday returns policy.
Our guide What to buy a cybersecurity enthusiast when you know nothing about hacking helps you pick the right gift first time, which avoids exchanges.
Last-minute plan B: online challenge and gift voucher
The parcel won't make it, or orders haven't opened in time. Here are three solutions that still work on Christmas Eve.
The online challenge. CTF platforms are free and instant. Pick a first challenge suited to their level on picoCTF or Hackropole (the France Cybersecurity Challenge archive published by ANSSI), print it and offer to solve it together.
The "coming soon" card. Write the gift you're going to give on a card, with a photo of the product and a note: "Arriving in January." For an enthusiast, the wait is part of the fun. It's also the right approach for our CTF puzzles, which open from 2027.
The ebook. Many technical publishers sell their books as ebooks, delivered instantly by email.
The simplest option is still to choose early. Browse our shop and sign up on the products that interest you: you'll get our delivery dates as soon as orders open, and you'll know whether you need a plan B.
Frequently asked questions
Will Hacker Toys deliver before Christmas 2026?
We can't promise that yet: our products aren't on sale and the first batches are on their way. Sign up on a product page to get delivery dates as soon as orders open.
Do I pay customs on a parcel from China?
Since July 2021, VAT is due in the EU on every imported parcel whatever its value, often with a carrier handling fee. Rules on customs duty for small parcels are tightening too: check the current position with your national customs authority before ordering. The UK has its own import rules since Brexit.
Can I return a gift bought online after Christmas?
When you buy online from a business in the EU or the UK, you generally have a 14-day cancellation period from delivery. Some shops extend it over the holidays, but check their terms before buying.
